![]() ![]() WHAT OTHERS SAYMagical Nuance on the Combination of the Past and Present Published on Nusa Tenggara 12 November 2000 Although I Ketut Teja Astawa and Artayasa come from different backgrounds, one used to do graffiti and another used to catch the political phenomena with face deformation, the exhibition remain in a unity. The exhibition theme was "Possibilities" and held in Galeri Sembilan, Lodtunduh, Ubud. The theme told us one thing: "magical nuance on the combination of the past and today". Although they are still young (both are alumni of STSI Denpasar-now ISI), they used to witness the changes in both social and environment that has its root on the past culture-without neglecting the present. They used the combination of the past and present to inspire their artworks. Hence, their artworks have mystical and magical nuance. Anak Agung Rai, the owner of the ARMA museum, also notices the power shown by both artists. After opening the exhibition Rai said that the exhibition of Astawa and Artayasa is important to show that both of them are Easterners. "Realize it or not both artists are standing on opposite direction", said Rai. Both artists are controlled by the present, while the past only serve as the paths. Both are evolving. Teja Astawa is based in Sanur, while Artayasa in Payangan, so they certainly have different backgrounds. They have passion to go forward. On most of their magical artworks we can feel a mature technique that resulting from alumni of a great academic environment. "Because of their strong mystical and magical powers, when we enter the exhibition we can feel the vibrations and auras", said Rai. So, whatever they do they cannot get away from the past. In fact, they use the past as source or inspiration that wrap with the present. Why? "Because a typical Easterner cannot get away or abandon the past", said Rai. He refers the past as the experience in social, cultural, political, and mystical environments. They try to dispatch impressions: in colour, expression, and spontaneity. Although the come from different backgrounds their artworks have shown a friction. This is because they came from the same institution STSI Denpasar and the Sangga Bhuwana. "The concept of their paintings is almost the same. However, there is small difference, and we can only see them when we take a closer look". They are manifestation of a reformation that governed professionally. This means their artworks contain no childish term. Although they are young, but their artworks are result from deep inspiration. From their artworks, we can see the potential of the newest Balinese artist and also measure whether they can go forward, stable, or go backward. Rai sees that both of them are great assets that some day will play important role in national or international level. Christoper Stern, the owner of the Galeri Sembilan, choose these young artists because their artworks continue to evolve. "They dare to 'leave' their previous artworks to face a never ending wind of change. The past still leaving an imprint, but that was only small paths", said Stern. Meanwhile, Jean Couteau-a French culture vulture-adds that both of them have expressed colour on canvas with their own style. They start a new paradigm of Bali fine arts through Galeri Sembilan: An international paradigm, away from any reference to Balinese culture, individualist in performance, and clear political dispatch. They are from the same generation that positioned themselves against the trend. Their creativity is intentionally outside the identity path. As Teja said, "What does it mean to be a Balinese?" The movement of fine arts that goes over any reference to Bali ethnic has shown a deep change on mentality of Balinese youth.
